City on the Hill Youth Summer Woodwork Training

Building Skills, Confidence, and Community

This summer, the City on the Hill Youth Foundation took on one of its most inspiring hands-on projects yet — constructing a cedar pergola and small deck for the Center of Independence. Led by Instructor Tyrone Porties, our youth learned valuable trade skills while building something that will stand tall for years to come.

For four weeks, a group of young adults committed themselves to the craft. What began as training quickly became a full-scale project that combined woodworking, teamwork, and community purpose. The result: a sturdy, beautiful outdoor space that will serve as a place of gathering, reflection, and connection — and a lasting reminder of what dedication can build.

Hands-On Learning in Action

Every day brought new lessons. Under Tyrone’s supervision, the students perfected their skills using the table saw, miter saw, and trim tools. They mixed and poured concrete, cut and secured cedar beams, and learned the detailed finishing work that brings projects to life — sanding, staining, and sealing each piece with care.

What made this build even more special was the collaboration between City on the Hill Youth Foundation and the Center of Independence, two organizations committed to empowering others. The pergola and deck now stand as a symbol of unity and craftsmanship, built by hands still learning but guided by purpose and mentorship.

More Than a Structure

This project wasn’t just about wood and nails — it was about opportunity. Each student gained the kind of real-world experience that can’t be taught in a classroom alone. They learned patience, problem-solving, and the value of working together toward something bigger than themselves.

Though the pergola and deck were the main focus, our trainees also contributed to building custom rehabilitation tables for children with mobility challenges. These smaller builds reinforced the same lesson: that every project, no matter the size, can change lives when done with care and compassion.

Training for a Purpose

The Summer Woodwork Training Program gives our youth the chance to gain tangible trade experience while making a direct impact in the community. All participants are still in training, learning under the skilled direction of Tyrone Porties. Because these are supervised learning projects, we offer them at a discounted rate, ensuring both skill growth and community benefit.

The pergola and deck they built will stand strong for at least the next 20 years, a lasting testament to what young people can achieve when given a chance to learn, work, and lead.
